  26. If you were getting speeds of around 1900cps, that would suggest that the
  27. limiting factor was the comms port speed. Since you're seeing about 1600CPS,
  28. the limiting factor in this case is the phone line speed; because the data is
  29. already zipped and not compressable, you don't get any extra speed from the
  30. modem's compression.

  32. If you increase the port speed, your CPS will not increase, it will drop down
  33. to about 900CPS or probably lower because characters will be dropped (between
  34. the modem and the PC) and entire blocks will have to be resent.

  36. If you replace the UART with a 16550, you will be able to lock the port at a
  37. higher speed, but the modem will continue to send your uncompressable data at
  38. 14400 BPS and you'll still get about 1600CPS.
